US President Donald Trump will pay a state visit to the United Kingdom this September. This will be his second state visit during his presidency, making him the first US president in history to make two state visits to the UK.
According to the UK daily The Guardian on July 14 (local time), Buckingham Palace announced that President Trump will visit the UK from September 17 to 19.
King Charles III is expected to invite President Trump and his wife Melania to Windsor Castle. The detailed schedule has not yet been disclosed.
President Trump is the first US president to be invited for a state visit to the UK twice. During his first term in 2019, he made a state visit to the UK at the invitation of Queen Elizabeth II.
Although King Charles III officially extends the invitation for a state visit, it is in practice based on the advice of the UK government. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer personally conveyed the intention of the British royal family to invite President Trump for a state visit when he visited the US in February. Prime Minister Starmer has established a friendly relationship with President Trump, including being the first to conclude a tariff agreement with the US.
However, during this visit, President Trump is not expected to address the UK Parliament. Previous US presidents who made state visits to the UK, such as Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, delivered speeches before both Houses of Parliament. French President Emmanuel Macron, who visited the UK last week, also addressed Parliament.
However, 15 Labour Party Members of Parliament and others have recently signed a parliamentary motion urging that President Trump not be allowed to speak during his state visit, criticizing him for displaying misogynistic, racist, and xenophobic tendencies.
