CNN: South Korea Becomes Key Weapons Supplier for U.S. Allies

Potential Within the Supply Chain Draws Attention

There are observations that South Korea is solidifying its position as a major global arms exporter.

On July 12 (local time), CNN reported that "South Korea has become a key weapons supplier for America’s allies," citing South Korea’s arms exports to Poland and referencing analyses from think tanks to examine this trend.

CNN highlighted analyses that, as the United States’ continued military aid to Israel, Ukraine, and others gradually depletes its own weapons stockpiles, South Korea is emerging as an alternative supplier for America’s allies in need of arms.

According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), over the past five years, South Korea’s arms exports have risen to rank 10th in the world. During this period, 46% of South Korea’s arms export value went to Poland.

The Stimson Center, a U.S. think tank, stated in a report published last year that South Korea is gaining attention as an alternative to the United States. The report also explained that "South Korea’s defense industry capabilities, especially the growth in the arms and shipbuilding sectors, have the potential to directly support the United States."

CNN additionally mentioned South Korea’s strength in shipbuilding, noting that the United States has signed maintenance contracts with South Korean shipbuilders for naval support vessels.
