People Power Party Sejong City Council Members Visit MOF Labor Union Hunger Strike Protest Site

One-person Protest in Front of the National Assembly, Condemning the MOF Relocation That Fuels Regional Conflict

As the government maintains its policy to relocate the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) to Busan, the community in Sejong is in turmoil. Members of the Sejong City Council from the People Power Party have announced that they will join forces with citizens and continue their fight to the end to prevent the relocation of the MOF, pressing on with their campaign despite the intense heat.

On July 11, these council members set up a tent at the three-way intersection in front of the main gate of Yeouido, Seoul, and visited the protest site of the National Government Employees' Union MOF branch, which is resisting the unilateral push for the relocation by the Lee Jaemyung administration through acts such as shaving their heads and hunger strikes.

The People Power Party council members who visited the protest site were Hong Nayoung (floor leader), Kim Dongbin (second vice chairman), Kim Chungsik, Kim Hakseo, Yoon Jisung, and Choi Wonseok. From early in the morning, they held solo protests in front of the National Assembly, and met with Jeong Heeyong (representing Goryeong-gun, Seongju-gun, and Chilgok-gun in North Gyeongsang Province), the People Power Party secretary of the National Assembly's Agriculture, Food, Rural Affairs, Oceans and Fisheries Committee, as well as Hwang Gyupil, the chief expert member. They conveyed the sentiments of the Sejong region and requested that efforts be made for the national cause of balanced regional development and the completion of the administrative capital.

Hong Nayoung, the floor leader, stated, "We must protect the MOF together with the citizens in administrative capital Sejong," and emphasized, "The Democratic Party, which threatens the nation's long-term vision, must immediately halt the hasty relocation of the MOF and withdraw the relocation plan." She also warned, "Public opinion in favor of completing the administrative capital will spread beyond the local community to the entire Chungcheong region and nationwide, exposing the reality of this rushed initiative."
