"Actually a High Earner... Feeling Betrayed" Shinchan's Father Heats Up Portals with Surprising Salary [Japan Inside]

Father of Shinchan Owns a Four-Room House and a Car
Estimated Annual Salary: 6 Million Yen
Shinchan's Father's Salary Draws Attention During Japan's Bonus Season
Average Summer Bonus at Major Companies: 9.28 Million KRW

As I have grown older, I find myself empathizing more with adult characters than with children when watching animation. In "Dooly the Little Dinosaur," I have started to understand Go Gil-dong, and when I watch "Crayon Shinchan," I relate to Shinchan's father, who always comes home exhausted.

This week, Shinchan's father became a hot topic on the Japanese portal site Yahoo Japan. In the Korean version of the "Crayon Shinchan" animation, he appears as Shin Youngsik, but his Japanese name is Nohara Hiroshi. The reason he has drawn attention is that this week coincides with the period when Japanese office workers receive their summer bonuses.

Although he always seems to be struggling to make ends meet in the animation, there has been talk that he is actually a high-income earner who makes quite a bit of money. Today, I will share with you the estimated annual salary of Shinchan's father, as well as an analysis of the average annual salary of Japanese office workers as reported by Japanese media this year.

Japanese lifestyle and economic media outlet Limo estimated Shinchan's father's average annual salary to coincide with the summer bonus season. In the animation, he is introduced as a 35-year-old employee at Futaba Corporation. He has a stay-at-home wife, two children, and even a dog. They live in a detached house, which is described as "4DK." This is a Japanese way of indicating the layout of a house, similar to "3 rooms and 1 bathroom" in Korea, meaning four rooms plus a dining kitchen. When you think about it, it is quite a large house. They also own a car.

Based on the information from the "Miserable Payday" episode aired in 1994, it is estimated that his annual salary is about 6 million yen (56,220,000 KRW). There is a scene where his take-home pay is mentioned as about 300,000 yen (2,810,000 KRW) per month, and if you calculate this as pre-tax income, it would be approximately 380,000 yen (3,560,000 KRW). Considering that the summer bonus is typically equivalent to two months' salary, this leads to the calculation of an annual salary of 6 million yen.

According to the 2023 National Tax Agency's Private Sector Salary Survey in Japan, the average annual salary for men in their 30s is 4.92 million yen (46,100,000 KRW) for those aged 30-34 and 5.56 million yen (52,090,000 KRW) for those aged 35-39. Shinchan's father's annual salary is nearly 1 million yen (9,370,000 KRW) higher than the current average for men in their 30s. Of course, it is difficult to directly compare the 1990s, when the show was broadcast, with the present. Limo also mentioned, "These days, the age group with an average annual salary exceeding 6 million yen starts from those in their 40s and above."

Since Shinchan's father was depicted as someone working during Japan's economic boom, it may seem that he earned more money. Recently, the amount of summer bonuses paid in Japan has been steadily increasing. According to Keidanren's "2025 Summer Bonus and Lump-Sum Payment Settlement Status by Major Industry," the preliminary average settlement amount for large companies paying summer bonuses this year was 990,848 yen (9,284,543 KRW), an increase of 4.37% compared to the previous year.

As the summer vacation period coincides with the bonus season, many people are planning their holidays based on their bonuses. In particular, with the Osaka Expo currently taking place, related reservations have reportedly increased significantly.
