Former President Yoon Seokyeol was rearrested on July 10 by the special prosecutor's team led by Cho Eunseok, which is investigating charges of insurrection.
This comes four months after he was first detained by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials on charges of being the ringleader of the insurrection, and subsequently released following a court decision to cancel his detention.
Nam Sejin, the judge in charge of warrants at the Seoul Central District Court, issued an arrest warrant for former President Yoon at approximately 2:07 a.m. on this day. The arrest was requested by the special prosecutor's team for insurrection and is based on charges including abuse of power, obstruction of special official duties, fabrication and use of false official documents, violation of the Presidential Records Act, damage to official documents, violation of the Presidential Security Act, and aiding and abetting the escape of a criminal.
Judge Nam stated the reason for issuing the warrant was "concern over destruction of evidence," following a pre-arrest detention hearing (warrant review) that lasted 6 hours and 40 minutes from 2:22 p.m. the previous day.
