The number of candidates for the specialist nurse exam has continued to increase, with 533 in 2023 and 565 last year.

This year, the largest number of candidates for the first exam were in geriatric nursing (137), followed by infection control and oncology nursing (79 each), and critical care nursing (61).

The second exam will be held on August 24, and the final successful candidates will be announced on September 19.

The specialist nurse system in Korea began in January 2000, when a revision of the Medical Service Act changed the titles of nurses in four fields?public health, anesthesia, psychiatric, and family nursing?to "specialist nurse." Since then, new fields have been added, including infection control, industrial, emergency, geriatric, critical care, hospice, oncology, clinical, and pediatric nursing, so that specialist nurses now work in a total of 13 fields.

To become a specialist nurse, one must hold a nursing license and have at least three years of practical experience within the past ten years. In addition, a master's degree that includes the educational curriculum for each field, as specified by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, is required to be eligible for the exam.
