The special prosecutor team led by Min Jungki, which is investigating allegations related to former President Yoon Sukyeol's wife, Kim Gunhee, is coordinating a schedule to question Kang Hyekyung, the first whistleblower in the "Myung Taegyun allegations," as a reference witness.
On July 7, Kang's legal representatives announced to the media, "We are currently coordinating an appearance schedule with the special prosecutor, but nothing has been finalized yet." They added, "Today, we proactively contacted the special prosecutor's office to express our intention to submit materials and appear. As a public interest whistleblower, Kang will actively cooperate with the investigation and take the lead in uncovering the truth."
The legal team also stated, "We have been organizing a vast amount of materials even before the special prosecutor's office was launched. We are still collecting and organizing forensic data and account records, and such preparations are expected to provide substantial assistance to the special prosecutor, whose investigation period is limited."
The special prosecutor's team plans to summon Kang soon as a reference witness. With this summons, there is speculation that the investigation into the "Myung Taegyun allegations," which is a key focus specified in the special prosecutor law, will begin in earnest.
Kang is the deputy director of Mirae Hanguk Research Institute, a polling company reportedly run in practice by Myung Taegyun, who has been identified as a "political broker." She is also a former accounting manager for former lawmaker Kim Youngsun. Kang was the first to raise suspicions that Myung, in collusion with the former president and his wife, provided polling services free of charge, and in return, Kim Youngsun received the party nomination for the June 1, 2022 parliamentary by-election. The special prosecutor believes that Myung conducted a total of 81 illegal polls.
Kang has previously appeared as a reference witness for both the prosecution and the police regarding allegations of proxy payment for polls involving former Daegu Mayor Hong Joonpyo and Seoul Mayor Oh Sehoon. Since all these cases are within the scope of the special prosecutor's investigation, there are expectations that major figures will be summoned following Kang's questioning.
