Yangju City Launches 3rd Term of Regional Council for North Korean Defectors Support

Supporting the Stable Settlement of North Korean Defectors in the Community

Yangju City in Gyeonggi Province announced on July 7 that it recently held the appointment ceremony for the 3rd term of the Yangju City Regional Council for North Korean Defectors Support, along with the first council meeting of 2025, in the situation room on the 2nd floor of city hall.

The Yangju City Regional Council for North Korean Defectors Support was first launched in June 2021 and has been operated as a policy deliberation body to support the stable settlement of North Korean defectors in the local community.


The 3rd term of the council is composed of experts recommended by relevant organizations, including the Yangju City Council, Yangju Police Station, Gyeonggi Northern Hana Center, and Yangju Employment Welfare Plus Center.


At the meeting, the ceremony for presenting letters of appointment was held, followed by the election of a vice chairperson, a report on the current status of residence and support for North Korean defectors, and discussions on future support measures.


In particular, the main agenda included strengthening cooperation among institutions and linking policies, in order to establish effective settlement support measures for North Korean defectors in the region.


Mayor Yang Suhyun stated, "I ask all council members to work together so that North Korean defectors can receive practical assistance, based on your expertise and passion," and added, "The city will spare no effort in providing administrative and financial support."


Yangju City plans to continue promoting various projects centered on the council to support the social adaptation and self-reliance of North Korean defectors.
