Lee Donghwan and British Ambassador Discuss
Climate Crisis Response at BLACKPINK Concert
On July 6, Lee Donghwan, mayor of Goyang Special City, visited the main stadium of Goyang Sports Complex, the venue for BLACKPINK's world tour "DEADLINE" concert, to encourage the climate crisis response promotion booth operated by the British Embassy in Korea.

During his meeting with Colin Crooks, British Ambassador to Korea, Mayor Lee stated, "This BLACKPINK concert is an eco-friendly event that partially replaces concert power with renewable energy, naturally conveying the value of sustainability to citizens." He emphasized, "Just as the UK government is implementing greenhouse gas reduction policies for future generations, Goyang City has also set a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 36% by 2030 and is actively working to realize an eco-friendly city."
Mayor Lee also introduced, "Since last year, we have continued mutual cooperation by visiting prestigious British schools such as the University of Birmingham and King's College School to attract campuses within the Goyang Free Economic Zone," and discussed ways to further strengthen ongoing cooperation between the UK and Goyang City in the future.
The promotion booth operated by the British Embassy in Korea introduced major UK climate policies, including the 'Net Zero' goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, an 81% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2035, the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), the 'Clean Power 2030' initiative to convert 95% of electricity demand to clean energy sources by 2030, and the complete phase-out of coal power plants in 2024.
Meanwhile, Goyang City has been recognized as a model case of a low-carbon ecological city through initiatives such as registering Janghang Wetland as a Ramsar Wetland, constructing 425 km of bicycle roads, creating the Baekrigil riverside trail and the "Goyang Forest" in Mongolia, and operating resource circulation shops and climate environment schools. In May last year, the city received a special award at the 5th ESG Korea Award.
