Gustavo Dudamel to Perform with LA Philharmonic at Seoul Arts Center
Mahler's 'Resurrection' and Stravinsky's 'The Rite of Spring' Among Featured Works
President Lee Jaemyung mentioned 'El Sistema' during a meeting with figures from the cultural and artistic sectors held on the 'Pine Grass' lawn in front of the presidential office building on June 30.
El Sistema is the National System of Youth and Children's Orchestras Foundation in Venezuela, which provides music education programs for children and adolescents from low-income backgrounds.
The most celebrated star produced by El Sistema, Gustavo Dudamel, Music Director of the Los Angeles (LA) Philharmonic, will visit Korea for the first time in six years this October. Dudamel is scheduled to perform at the Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall on October 21 and 22.
On the 21st, he will conduct Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 2 'Resurrection,' a large-scale piece with a performance time of 80 to 90 minutes. On the 22nd, he will present the Korean premiere of 'Frenzy' by American contemporary composer John Adams, followed by performances of Igor Stravinsky's signature works, the 'Firebird' Suite and 'The Rite of Spring.'
Born in 1981 in the small Venezuelan city of Barquisimeto, Dudamel joined El Sistema at the age of 10 to study violin. From the age of 14, he also studied composition and conducting, and in 2004, he gained worldwide attention by winning the Gustav Mahler International Conducting Competition.
Since then, Dudamel has debuted with both the Vienna Philharmonic and the Berlin Philharmonic, two of the world's leading orchestras. After serving as Music Director of the Gothenburg Symphony, he has been the Music Director of the LA Philharmonic since the 2009-2010 season.
This season marks Dudamel's final year with the LA Philharmonic, concluding a 17-year journey with the orchestra. He is set to become the Music Director of the New York Philharmonic in September next year.
El Sistema was founded in 1975 by Dr. Jose Antonio Abreu, a Venezuelan musician and economist. In 2020, the Yun Isang Peace Foundation selected Dr. Abreu as the recipient of the Yun Isang Peace Music Prize.
