In response to the Korea Meteorological Administration's expanded heat wave advisory, Gyeonggi Province will activate its 'Heat Wave Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters' starting at 1:00 p.m. on July 7.
Earlier on the same day, at 10:00 a.m., the Korea Meteorological Administration issued heat wave warnings for 29 cities and counties and heat wave advisories for 2 cities and counties within the province.
Accordingly, Gyeonggi Province has transitioned its 'Joint Task Force for Heat Wave Preparedness,' which has been operating since June 29, to a disaster response phase.
With the activation of the Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, 12 departments in 6 teams?including disaster, welfare, health, agriculture and fisheries, rescue and emergency, and media?will monitor the heat wave response and damage status of cities and counties from the provincial disaster situation room, maintaining emergency work protocols for each department.
Kim Sungjung, the First Vice Governor of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "Unlike last year, the heat wave has begun across all of Gyeonggi Province from early July," and requested that special instructions be communicated to cities and counties to ensure active measures are taken to prevent casualties among vulnerable groups due to the heat wave.
On this day, Vice Governor Kim issued an official directive instructing: ▲ proactive response and countermeasures in anticipation of prolonged heat waves; ▲ safety checks and inspections for vulnerable groups such as the homeless, at-risk elderly, and outdoor workers; ▲ expanded nighttime operation of cooling shelters in preparation for tropical nights; and ▲ strengthened public communication of safety guidelines using various real-time media such as village broadcasts and emergency disaster text messages.
Meanwhile, to strengthen protection measures for heat wave-vulnerable sectors such as mobile workers, Gyeonggi Province provided 2 billion won from the Disaster Relief Fund to cities and counties on June 20.
