Began Duties with Tribute at May 18 Democratization Cemetery
No Separate Inauguration Ceremony Held
Song Kang, the new Chief Prosecutor of the Gwangju High Prosecutors' Office, stated on July 4 in his inaugural remarks, "There are growing calls for change and reform within the prosecution, and it is difficult to deny that a certain level of public consensus has formed around this reality." Song officially began his duties by paying tribute at the National May 18 Democratization Cemetery, foregoing a separate inauguration ceremony.
In his inaugural address, Song emphasized, "Although the criminal justice system is undergoing many changes, the prosecution's mission to protect the lives and property of the people from crime remains unchanged." He added, "While we must reflect on the areas where we have fallen short of public expectations during the discussions on institutional reform, we must also pay close attention to ensure that there are no gaps in our response to crime that could result in harm to the public."
He further stated, "What the public wants is not conflict between institutions, but functional cooperation with related agencies such as the police, while faithfully fulfilling our duty to protect basic rights." He stressed, "Prosecutorial investigations, the maintenance of indictments, and the execution of sentences must be centered on the lives of the people, and active cooperation is necessary to achieve this." Addressing members of the prosecution organization, he said, "When I see colleagues who dedicate themselves to their work, I am convinced that we can restore public trust."
Song Kang is a 29th-term graduate of the Judicial Research and Training Institute and has previously served as Director of the Criminal Affairs Bureau at the Ministry of Justice, Chief Prosecutor of the Incheon District Prosecutors' Office, and Head of the Planning and Coordination Department at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office.
