The BBC reported on July 3 that Jota (full name Diogo Jose Teixeira da Silva) died in a car accident while traveling with his brother Andre Silva in Zamora, Spain.

According to Spanish police, Jota and Silva were driving a Lamborghini and attempting to overtake another vehicle when a tire burst, causing the car to veer off the road and burst into flames. They were pronounced dead at approximately 12:30 a.m. local time on July 3.

The tragedy is even more heartbreaking as it occurred just about ten days after Jota married his longtime partner, Lute Cardoso. Jota and Cardoso have three children together.

Jota played for Atletico Madrid in Spain and Wolverhampton Wanderers in England before joining the major club Liverpool in 2020.

Over five seasons in the Premier League (EPL), he scored 47 goals in 123 matches, and in all official competitions, he recorded 65 goals in 182 appearances. Last season, he scored 6 goals in the EPL (9 goals in all competitions), contributing to Liverpool's league title.

For the Portugal national team, he made 49 appearances and scored 14 goals.
