China's Military and Coast Guard Conduct Consecutive Patrols in Disputed Senkaku Islands and South China Sea

"Since June, Patrols and Vigilance Around Huangyan Dao Territorial Waters Have Been Strengthened"

China's military and coast guard have both announced that they conducted patrol activities in the disputed territories of the Senkaku Islands (known as Diaoyu Dao in China) and the South China Sea.

On July 3, the Southern Theater Command of the Chinese People's Liberation Army stated on its official social media account that it had organized air and naval forces to conduct combat readiness and vigilance patrols in the territorial waters and airspace of China's Huangyan Dao (Scarborough Shoal) and surrounding areas.

The Southern Theater Command emphasized that, since June, it has strengthened patrols and vigilance around the territorial waters of Huangyan Dao, asserting that it is firmly safeguarding national sovereignty and security and is more resolutely maintaining peace and stability in the South China Sea region.

On the same day, the China Coast Guard also reported on its official social media account that a flotilla of vessel 1306 had conducted patrols in the territorial waters of Diaoyu Dao. The China Coast Guard explained that these patrol activities were conducted in accordance with the law to protect China's rights and interests.

China claims sovereignty over about 90% of the South China Sea, which has led to friction with Southeast Asian countries including the Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Brunei.

Additionally, China frequently discloses information about its patrols around the Senkaku Islands, which are effectively controlled by Japan, as a way to reinforce its territorial claims.
