Gwangyang City in Jeollanam-do (Mayor Jung Inhwa) was selected as the top institution (first place) in the city and county category of the 7th Dasan Safety Awards hosted by Jeollanam-do, securing 100 million won in prize money for project expenses.

The Dasan Safety Awards were established to honor the spirit of caring for the people emphasized by Dasan Jeong Yak-yong in "Mokmin Simseo," particularly in disaster prevention, response, and recovery, and to promote a culture of safety. Since 2018, Jeollanam-do has been discovering exemplary cases in the field of safety among individuals, organizations, and local governments, and has been presenting annual awards.

For this year's evaluation, Jeollanam-do selected awardees in the city and county category by comprehensively assessing both quantitative and qualitative factors, including disaster management evaluation, Safe Korea training evaluation, disaster prevention projects, and safety culture campaigns. Gwangyang City received high scores in all categories, ranking first in Jeollanam-do.

The city has strengthened its control tower function for disaster incidents, established a proactive response system, and built a field-oriented preventive safety management system, thereby achieving "zero safety accidents."

In addition, Gwangyang City has promoted a safety culture network based on public-private cooperation, implemented safety education across all life stages, and worked to create a people-centered safe urban environment.

Furthermore, the city has proven its status as a safe city by achieving outstanding results in various external evaluations, including being selected as an excellent institution in the 2024 Ministry of the Interior and Safety Disaster Management Evaluation, being designated as a region with a favorable Regional Safety Index, being chosen as an excellent institution in the Safe Korea training evaluation, and being recognized by the Korea Forest Service as an excellent institution in landslide disaster prevention.

The city has also taken the lead in spreading a culture of safety in daily life through a variety of experiential safety education and cultural activities, such as mobile children's safety classes, children's disaster safety musicals, children's safety experience festivals, youth suicide prevention and life-respect healing education, the "Namdo Safety Academy" for seniors, and seasonal and lifestyle-oriented themed education. As a result, the city achieved excellent results in 19 key initiatives.

Mayor Jung Inhwa stated, "This award is a valuable achievement created together with our citizens," and added, "We will continue to expand customized safety education for all life stages so that everyone in Gwangyang City can live safely and happily with peace of mind."
