A Self-Made Leader in the Global Logistics Industry
Jonathan Song Appointed as Head of CJ Logistics' Global Business Division
On July 2, CJ Logistics announced that it has appointed Jonathan Song (56), Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Expeditors International Global, a leading U.S. logistics company, as the new head of its Global Business Division.
Song is a self-made figure who has spent over 30 years in the global logistics industry, starting as a field practitioner and rising to the top-level position overseeing global sales and marketing. At Expeditors’ U.S. headquarters, he managed global sales and marketing across more than 60 countries, driving remarkable growth in both revenue and profit. He is recognized as a key figure in the company’s success and is regarded as one of the top sales experts in the advanced U.S. logistics market.
Song began his logistics career in 1991 at AEI (now DHL), where he was responsible for Asian air import cargo operations. He steadily built his practical expertise by performing a variety of roles, ranging from regional operations within the U.S. to developing cross-border logistics strategies and expanding the customer base.
After joining Expeditors in 1999, he took charge of sales and marketing for the Asia-Pacific region, establishing customer strategies by industry and implementing tailored approaches for each region. At that time, Song reorganized the globally dispersed sales teams into a unified strategic system and introduced customized strategies for clients in different industry sectors. Through these efforts, he contributed to shifting the company away from a short-term performance focus and toward building a sustainable revenue structure based on large B2B clients.
CJ Logistics expects that Song’s extensive global experience and strong sales philosophy will be a key driving force in achieving its global business vision. The company explained that Song’s hands-on sales expertise and insights into the global logistics market will create synergy with CJ Logistics’ global network, which currently spans 46 countries and 462 locations, helping the company move closer to its goal of becoming a global top 10 logistics provider.
In particular, Song’s recruitment is expected to further accelerate CJ Logistics’ efforts to expand in the U.S. and Indian markets, which have been set as central pillars for global growth. In the U.S., the company is expanding logistics hubs in Georgia and Kansas to grow its high value-added cold chain business, and is building large logistics centers in major cities such as New Jersey (New York) and Illinois (Chicago) in cooperation with Korea Ocean Business Corporation (KOBC). In India, CJ Logistics is enhancing its local competitiveness by offering multimodal transportation services that connect road and rail networks, leveraging the country’s vast domestic market.
The company is also expected to accelerate its expansion in the Middle East. In April, CJ Logistics established the Saudi GDC (Global Distribution Center) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and began pilot operations. The facility covers a total area of 18,000 square meters and can handle up to 15,000 boxes per day, with full-scale operations scheduled to begin in the second half of the year.
A CJ Logistics representative stated, "Song is a strategist who has established an unrivaled position in sales and marketing within the global logistics market," adding, "His leadership will create synergy with the company’s extensive global network and advanced logistics technology, further accelerating not only the expansion of our global presence but also the achievement of our 'global top 10' vision and the securing of supply chain leadership."
