Park Hyungsu Appointed as Secretary of National Assembly Budget Committee: "Will Lead Ruling and Opposition Consultations"

Park Hyungsu, member of the People Power Party (representing Uiseong, Cheongsong, Yeongdeok, and Uljin in North Gyeongsang Province), has been appointed as a secretary of the National Assembly Special Committee on Budget and Accounts.

On June 30, at the first meeting of the 426th extraordinary session of the Special Committee on Budget and Accounts, the National Assembly elected Park Hyungsu of the People Power Party and Lee Soyoung of the Democratic Party of Korea (representing Uiwang and Gwacheon in Gyeonggi Province) as the secretaries for the ruling and opposition parties, respectively.

Until recently, Park Hyungsu served as the chief deputy floor leader of the People Power Party, overseeing the party's parliamentary strategy and leading negotiations with the opposition.

With this appointment, Park Hyungsu becomes the first member of the People Power Party, now in the opposition following the change of administration, to take on the role of secretary for the Special Committee on Budget and Accounts.

The secretary of the Special Committee on Budget and Accounts is a key position that, together with the committee chair, leads the overall operation of the committee on behalf of their respective negotiation groups. The role wields substantial influence over committee composition, schedule coordination, agenda deliberation, budget adjustments, and institutional improvements.

Consultations between the secretaries play a critical role in determining whether to withhold or approve contentious budget bills and are directly linked to securing regional budgets.

Park Hyungsu stated, "I feel a great sense of responsibility as I take on the role of secretary for the Special Committee on Budget and Accounts at such a critical time." He added, "I will thoroughly monitor the government's and ruling party's unilateral and populist budget allocations to prevent the waste of taxpayers' money, and I will do my utmost to ensure that national finances are used where they are truly needed."

He further emphasized, "I will also devote my full efforts to securing budgets for North Gyeongsang Province, including Uiseong, Cheongsong, Yeongdeok, and Uljin."

Park Hyungsu has previously served on the National Assembly's Strategy and Finance Committee and the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, and is currently a member of the Trade, Industry, Energy, SMEs, and Startups Committee. In 2020, he also participated as a member of the Special Committee on Budget and Accounts. He has held positions such as People Power Party spokesperson, chief deputy floor leader, secretary of the Operations Committee, and vice chair of the National Committee, and is currently serving as the head of the North Gyeongsang provincial party chapter.
