Twenty-year-old Aldrich Portgiter of South Africa has made his mark on the PGA Tour.

On June 29 (local time), at the Detroit Golf Club (par 72, 7,370 yards) in Detroit, Michigan, Portgiter shot a 3-under-par in the final round of the Rocket Classic (total prize money $9.6 million). He finished tied with Chris Kirk and Max Greyserman (both from the United States) at 22-under-par 266. Portgiter then secured victory with a birdie on the fifth playoff hole, the 15th (par 3). This was his first win in just his 14th tournament since debuting on the regular tour this year.

Portgiter carded six birdies and three bogeys. He earned a crucial birdie on the 17th hole (par 5) to join the playoff and ultimately claimed the title after four extra holes. In January last year, he won the PGA Korn Ferry (secondary) Tour's Bahamas Great Abaco Classic at the record-setting age of 19 years, 4 months, and 11 days. He debuted on the regular tour this year after qualifying through a top finish in the 2024 Korn Ferry Tour points standings.

After finishing runner-up in a playoff at the Mexico Open in February, Portgiter fell into a slump. He returned to competition a month after tying for sixth at the Charles Schwab Challenge last month, marking his second top-10 finish of the season. In this tournament, he shot a 10-under-par 62 in the first round to share the lead and set the stage for his victory.

With an average driving distance of 326.6 yards, Portgiter leads the entire PGA Tour this season. In this event, he averaged 337.20 yards off the tee (1st place) and posted a greens-in-regulation rate of 85.71% (3rd place), laying the foundation for his strong performance. On the final day, he averaged 348 yards (1st place) and hit a maximum of 370 yards (3rd place).

Chris Kirk, who has six career PGA Tour wins, was eliminated in the second playoff hole, while Greyserman lost in the fifth. World No. 5 Collin Morikawa (United States) finished tied for eighth at 19-under-par 269. Min Woo Lee (Australia) tied for 13th at 18-under-par 270, Byeong Hun An tied for 60th at 9-under-par 279, and Kim Siwoo finished 84th at 4-under-par 284.
