LG Smart Cottage Achieves Top 'Zero-Energy' Certification

First Among Prefabricated Buildings in Korea
Safety Certification Agreement Signed with Korea Electrical Safety Corporation

LG Electronics is setting new standards for energy efficiency and safety in modular housing with its 'LG Smart Cottage.' The LG Smart Cottage is a modular home that integrates LG Electronics' artificial intelligence (AI) appliances and HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) technology, with all energy used in the home supplied by electricity. Notably, a solar power generation system is installed on the roof, allowing the home to generate its own required energy.

On June 29, LG Electronics announced that the LG Smart Cottage has achieved the highest grade of zero-energy building certification, 'ZEB Plus,' among all prefabricated (pre-manufactured) buildings, including modular homes. Prefabrication refers to a construction method in which buildings are pre-manufactured in a factory and then transported and assembled on site. The LG Smart Cottage is the first building of its kind to receive 'ZEB Plus' certification.

The zero-energy building certification is a system administered by the Korea Energy Agency, which assigns grades based on the energy self-sufficiency rate of green buildings that minimize energy consumption by utilizing renewable energy sources. The LG Smart Cottage exceeded the first-grade standard of 100%, being recognized for producing more energy than it consumes.

LG Electronics also plans to lead the market in enhancing the safety and quality reliability of modular homes, which are gaining attention as next-generation residential models.

Recently, the company signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Korea Electrical Safety Corporation to ensure electrical safety in modular homes. This collaboration includes reviewing design drawings and conducting on-site manufacturing inspections, as well as cooperating in the establishment of a new 'Pre-Approved Modular Home Safety Certification System,' which assigns electrical safety certification grades. The system will be introduced for the first time with the LG Smart Cottage, with plans to jointly develop and verify electrical safety solutions in stages. This move is interpreted as an effort to set leading electrical safety standards for modular homes, using the LG Smart Cottage as the benchmark.

Jo Yeonwoo, head of LG Electronics Smart Cottage, stated, "By integrating space, appliances, and services to deliver a differentiated customer experience, the LG Smart Cottage will lead new changes in the construction industry."
