On June 25 (local time), the UK’s Daily Mail reported that, according to a recent experiment conducted by a British travel insurance company, the wheels of travel suitcases were found to harbor about 58 times more bacteria than public toilet seats. The researchers collected and analyzed bacteria from various parts of the suitcase, including the wheels, the bottom, and the handle. On the wheels, an average of 400 bacteria per cubic centimeter was detected, while the bottom surface showed an average of 350 bacteria per cubic centimeter. If you place your suitcase on your bed to unpack after returning home from a trip, you are essentially putting more bacteria on your bed than you would from a toilet seat.

This is because the suitcase wheels are constantly exposed to various contaminants as they roll along streets, public transportation, and the floors of public restrooms. Microbiologist Amy-May Pointer explained, "Suitcase wheels are essentially breeding grounds for bacteria, and the bottom surface is also highly contaminated." She added, "In particular, traces of black mold were found on both the wheels and the bottom surface, which can cause respiratory diseases or allergic reactions." Pointer stated, "Suitcase wheels are like magnets for bacteria," but also emphasized, "By simply following basic hygiene practices, you can prevent bacteria from spreading throughout your home."

Pointer stressed that when staying at a hotel, you should always place your suitcase on a luggage rack. If there is no separate place to put your luggage, covering the wheels with disposable plastic shower caps can also be effective in preventing bacteria from transferring to bedding or carpets. When moving your suitcase, you should be careful not to let the wheels roll through dirty areas such as puddles, muddy water, or public floors. It is also advisable to make it a habit to wash your hands after handling your suitcase during travel. She added, "Even if you don't touch the wheels directly, you can still be exposed to bacteria through the handle."

Above all, it is important not to place your suitcase directly on your bed or sofa immediately upon arriving home. First, you should thoroughly wipe down the exterior with disinfectant wipes or a cloth dampened with soapy water. If the wheels are detachable, it is best to wash them by soaking them in warm soapy water. For hard-shell suitcases, use diluted bleach, and for fabric suitcases, wipe with a vacuum cleaner or a damp cloth. If you find traces of mold, it is recommended to clean them using baking soda.
