'Oldboy' and 'Memories of Murder' Selected for NYT's 'Best Films of the 21st Century'

Celine Song's "Past Lives" Also Included

Multiple Korean films have been included in the New York Times (NYT) list of the "100 Best Films of the 21st Century."

On June 26 (local time), the NYT announced its rankings, with director Park Chanwook's "Oldboy" (2003) placing 43rd and director Bong Joonho's "Memories of Murder" (2003) ranking 99th. "Past Lives" (2023), directed by Korean-Canadian filmmaker Celine Song, also made the list at 86th place.

The results were compiled from a survey of 500 individuals, including globally renowned directors, actors, producers, and film enthusiasts, focusing on movies released after January 1, 2000. The NYT began revealing its rankings this week, announcing up to 21st place on this day. The top 20, from 1st to 20th, will be unveiled on June 27 (local time).

The NYT highlighted the scene in "Oldboy" where Oh Dae-su (Choi Minshik) fights his way down a corridor, bloodied and wielding a hammer. The publication noted, "This famous action sequence epitomizes the operatic violence of this twisted thriller," and described the film as "one that provokes and unsettles viewers right up to its final scene."

Regarding "Memories of Murder," the NYT commented, "From the very first scene, it is clear that the film is not bound by Hollywood genre conventions." The review continued, "Director Bong Joonho has a firm perspective on humanity's limits in the face of unfathomable evil," adding, "He explores this by blending unexpected humor with sharp drama."

Movie 'Fast Lives' Still Cut

On "Past Lives," the NYT wrote, "The story, which unfolds between New York and Seoul, is filled with exquisite reflections on time, love, fate, and reinvention," and added, "The final scene will break your heart."
