There has been some controversy surrounding the design of the wedding invitation for Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez.

On June 25 (local time), CNN revealed Jeff Bezos's wedding invitation. The invitation read, "We are so delighted to have you join us. We have one request in advance," and continued, "We kindly decline gifts." It went on to say, "In gratitude for your coming all the way to Venice, Italy to celebrate with us, we would like to make a donation in your name," and added, "Through your participation, we hope Venice will continue to inspire generations to come."

However, the invitation has sparked debate among international internet users. Some have criticized the design of the invitation as being lackluster, especially in contrast to the astronomical amount reportedly being spent on the wedding.

CNN reported, "The slanted italic script, along with scattered illustrations of doves, shooting stars, butterflies, and the Venetian landmark Rialto Bridge, appeared more spontaneous than sophisticated. Some even commented that it resembled the default images in Microsoft Word."

On X (formerly Twitter), users commented, "It looks like it was made by an 11-year-old," "It seems like it was created with a basic computer program," and "They're spending hundreds of millions on the wedding, but this is the invitation? It makes no sense." However, some noted that the design is in line with Bezos's typically casual style of dress.

Given the situation, some have speculated that the preparation of the invitation may have been deprioritized amid a complex backdrop, including a sudden change in venue due to protest concerns and intense media attention. Bezos's wedding was originally scheduled to be held in central Venice, but was moved to the outskirts following protests from local civic groups.

Recently, in the fashion world, invitations have become an important element used to showcase a brand's identity and set the tone for events. For example, the invitation to the 2023 coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla of the United Kingdom was decorated with watercolor and gold leaf, and was considered a work of art. Luxury brand Dior also drew attention for its bold move of sending out fashion show invitations on ceramic plates adorned with pink eggs for its show on June 27.

CNN pointed out that Bezos's wedding and the debut fashion show of Dior's chief designer Jonathan Anderson are both scheduled for the same day. The report added, "Some VIP guests may have been torn over which event to attend," and suggested, "Perhaps the key to their decision was the invitation itself."
