2025 Yangpyeong International Academic Symposium

Yangpyeong County in Gyeonggi Province (Governor Jeon Jinseon) announced on the 26th that the '2025 Yangpyeong International Academic Symposium,' held on the 25th at the Mulbit Theater in Yangpyeong Library, concluded successfully.

This symposium, held under the theme "The Battle of Jipyeong-ri: Untold Stories," was organized as part of Yangpyeong County's ongoing project to establish a city of historical and cultural significance. Its purpose was to shed light on the Battle of Jipyeong-ri?a core topic for both the Yangpyeong International Peace Park and the Yangpyeong Museum?from the perspectives of various countries.


The event was evaluated as a meaningful venue for fostering a balanced understanding of military history and enabling significant communication with postwar generations, by focusing not only on the outcomes of war but also on the lives of individuals who experienced it and the message of peace. Leading scholars in military and modern history from the United States, France, China, and Korea participated as speakers at the symposium.


The keynote speech was delivered by Kim Sungsoo, head of the "Friends of Jipyeong-ri" group (attorney), who highlighted the human aspects and historical significance of the battle through key figures such as General Monclar. William Michael Alexander, historian of the U.S. 2nd Division and 8th Army, analyzed the strategies of the UN forces and the development of the Battle of Jipyeong-ri. Ivan Cadeau, Director of Doctrine, Operations, and Intelligence at the French Defense Historical Service, discussed the strategic significance of the French Battalion's organization and activities.


Additionally, Professor Shen Zhihua of East China Normal University interpreted the background of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army's fourth offensive, while Park Dongchan, senior researcher at the Ministry of National Defense's Institute for Military History Compilation, presented on the significance of the Jipyeong-ri area battle as a historical turning point, drawing particular attention.


Speakers from each country addressed a wide range of topics, going beyond military analysis of the battle to include the experiences of soldiers and civilians at the time, as well as the significance of the battle in the context of international affairs, which was met with enthusiastic response from attendees.


As a side event, relics related to the Battle of Jipyeong-ri were exhibited in the library lobby, vividly conveying the historical site to local residents and visitors attending the event.


Governor Jeon Jinseon stated, "This symposium served as a meaningful opportunity to re-examine Yangpyeong's international historical status and to foster international solidarity for peace," adding, "We will continue to strive for Yangpyeong's growth as a sustainable city of historical and cultural significance through the establishment of the Yangpyeong International Peace Park and the Yangpyeong Museum."
