The police have arrested a member of the People's Democracy Party on charges of violating the National Security Act.
On June 26, the Security Investigation Division of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced to the media, "We executed an arrest warrant for one member of the People's Democracy Party who failed to comply with a summons."
The police reportedly requested multiple times for Jeong, the head of Banil Haengdong, to appear for questioning. After Jeong refused to comply, the police obtained an arrest warrant from the court and executed it.
Banil Haengdong, which has been staging a sit-in protest in front of the Statue of Peace, is known to have been under investigation for charges of praising and encouraging activities in violation of the National Security Act.
The People's Democracy Party was founded in November 2016 under the name Hansu Bokji Party and changed its name the following year.
Two co-representatives of the Korea Solidarity for Independent Reunification and Democracy (Korea Solidarity), known as the predecessor of this party, were sentenced to prison in both the first and second trials on charges of violating the National Security Act. At that time, the court defined Korea Solidarity as an anti-state organization.
