Chey Tae-won of SK Tops Group Operating Profit Last Year, Surpassing Lee Jae-yong of Samsung

CXO Institute Analyzes Business Performance of Group Leaders
Samsung Tops in Sales, Net Profit, and Employment

SK Group, led by Chairman Chey Tae-won, ranked first among Korean conglomerates in total operating profit last year, narrowly surpassing Samsung.


On the 25th, Korea CXO Institute, a corporate analysis firm, analyzed the 2024 management performance of the heads of 92 large business groups with fair assets of 5 trillion won or more, based on data released by the Fair Trade Commission, and confirmed these results.

Samsung, chaired by Lee Jae-yong of Samsung Electronics, maintained its top position in total group sales (399.6362 trillion won), net profit (41.6022 trillion won), and employment (284,761 people) last year.


However, in terms of total group operating profit last year, SK Group recorded 27.1385 trillion won, surpassing Samsung's 27.0352 trillion won by just 0.4%. The record-breaking operating profit of SK hynix, which reached 21.3314 trillion won, was nearly 9 trillion won higher than Samsung Electronics' operating profit of 12.3610 trillion won, significantly impacting the results.


SK Group also ranked first in group net profit growth rate, surging 2,689.1% from 658.2 billion won in 2023 to 18.3595 trillion won in 2024.


Hyundai Motor Group, led by Chairman Chung Euisun, ranked second after Samsung in group sales (292.1195 trillion won), net profit (23.7712 trillion won), and employment (203,915 people) last year. Although Hyundai Motor Group ranked first in total group operating profit two years ago, last year (18.5333 trillion won) it fell to third place after SK and Samsung.


In terms of group sales growth rate and operating profit growth rate, Chairman Cho Hyunbum of Hankook & Company and Chairman Park Jungseok of Korea H.C. ranked first. Hankook & Company Group doubled its sales in one year, from 4.2239 trillion won to 8.4668 trillion won last year, after acquiring Halla On System. Korea H.C., benefiting from improved performance at Korea Shipping Corporation, saw its group operating profit soar 1,450.3% from 45.3 billion won in 2023 to 702.9 billion won in 2024.


In group operating margin and net profit margin, Chairman Jang Byungkyu of Krafton ranked first. Last year, Krafton's operating margin and net profit margin were 43.9% and 50%, respectively.
