LS Cable & System Joins MS, AWS-Led 'Korea-Japan Submarine Communication Network' Project

First Turnkey Contract for International Submarine Communication Network in the Industry

LS Cable & System, leading its subsidiary LS Marine Solution, will participate for the first time in the cable industry in an international submarine communication network construction project. This is a large-scale infrastructure project led by Microsoft (MS) and Amazon Web Services (AWS), among others. LS Cable & System plans to expand its market beyond energy highways to include 'digital infrastructure'.

LS Cable & System announced on the 25th that it will jointly participate in the 'Korea-Japan Submarine Communication Network Construction Project (JAKO)' with LS Marine Solution. The JAKO Project is a large-scale submarine communication infrastructure project promoted by a consortium of global tech companies and telecommunications providers, including MS, AWS, Korea's Dreamline, and Japan's Arteria Networks.

This project involves constructing a communication network using optical cables over a total distance of 260 km connecting Busan and Fukuoka. Construction is scheduled to begin within this year and is expected to be completed in 2027. LS Cable & System is the first in the domestic cable industry to win an international submarine communication network project using the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) turnkey method. LS Cable & System will oversee the entire project, while LS Marine Solution will be responsible for submarine cable construction.

The submarine communication network is a key infrastructure to respond to the rapidly increasing data traffic driven by the expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud services. It is expected to play a pivotal role in Korea's emergence as a communication hub.

Through this project, LS Cable & System aims to establish a core axis of the Northeast Asia digital highway, and further strengthen its global presence in the digital infrastructure market, following its existing energy highway business.

Wanseop Joo, Executive Vice President and Head of LS Cable & System's Communication and Industrial Solutions Division, stated, "This is a meaningful case in which a domestic company is directly participating in a core infrastructure project led by global cloud and telecommunications companies. LS Cable & System and LS Marine Solution will continue to expand the submarine infrastructure market by strengthening global cooperation."
