The Reckless event was organized to honor the noble dedication of Sergeant Reckless, who made remarkable contributions during the Korean War, to raise security awareness, and to further highlight the symbolism of the South Korea-U.S. alliance.

This year marks the first time that Gyeonggi Province has officially hosted the Reckless commemoration event.

Reckless was a Korean horse that served with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War, bravely traversing the rugged terrain of the Baekhak-myeon area in Yeoncheon, Gyeonggi Province. By transporting and supplying 386 rounds of ammunition over 51 trips, Reckless greatly encouraged the soldiers and made significant contributions to maintaining the defensive line, earning the rank of sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps in recognition of these achievements.

The commemoration event featured a video presentation highlighting Reckless’s achievements, a commemorative performance by soprano Kim Jina, a performance by the Marine Corps Band and Honor Guard, and a horse show by Private Park Andrew Junho of the 9th Infantry Division.

In addition, participants toured security-related sites such as the UN Forces Crematory Facility and the Sangsang Observatory, both of which are security heritage sites and areas where Reckless served. There were also pre-event performances organized by the Baekhak-myeon Residents’ Association, as well as village and Reckless promotional booths, offering opportunities to experience the region’s history and culture.

Lee Gyesam, Director General for Balanced Development Planning of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "It was a very meaningful occasion to commemorate Reckless, a Korean-born U.S. Marine Corps sergeant, in Baekhak-myeon, Yeoncheon County, Gyeonggi Province, which is both a key area for Korea-U.S. security cooperation and the home of Reckless’s achievements." He added, "We believe Reckless will continue to strengthen the enduring bond of the Korea-U.S. alliance, and Gyeonggi Province will continue various efforts to promote the social and public value of horses and to foster security awareness among future generations."

Approximately 300 people attended the ceremony, including Lee Gyesam, Director General for Balanced Development Planning of Gyeonggi Province; Kim Gyuchang, Vice Chairman of the Gyeonggi Provincial Council; Bang Seonghwan, Chairman of the Agriculture and Maritime Affairs Committee of the Gyeonggi Provincial Council; Kim Suyong, Deputy Division Commander of the 2nd Marine Division; Peter E. Ankney, Deputy Commander of the U.S. Marine Corps in Korea; Oh Daeseok, Deputy Division Commander of the 25th Infantry Division; Ryu Hoguk, Deputy Governor of Yeoncheon County; members of the Yeoncheon County Council; related organizations; and local residents.
