The Chungbuk Hydrogen City Development Project is a large-scale initiative to transform Cheongju into an eco-friendly smart city based on hydrogen energy. The project is being carried out in line with the government’s Carbon Neutrality 2050 goal and hydrogen economy activation policies. The main focus is on revitalizing the hydrogen ecosystem in the central inland region.

Under the agreement, Hyundai Motor Group plans to expand the scale of its biogas-based clean hydrogen production facility under construction in Cheongju to four times the original plan. This will enable the production of 2,000 kg of clean hydrogen per day, ensuring a stable supply within the region. The company will also work to expand charging infrastructure and introduce hydrogen mobility solutions.

Chungbuk Province and Cheongju City plan to actively support the necessary budgets and various permits to facilitate the development of the hydrogen city. Korea Gas Safety Corporation will host hydrogen-related events and establish a Hydrogen Gas Safety Hub Center to train professional personnel. Korea Gas Technology Corporation will be responsible for overall project progress and performance management. Korea Electric Power Corporation will provide the smart power infrastructure needed for the hydrogen city.

Hyundai Motor Group expressed its expectation that this project would contribute to a rapid transition to a hydrogen society. At the subsequent “Chungbuk Hydrogen Economy Forum,” Hyundai Motor Group introduced the current status and future plans of its domestic and international hydrogen businesses based on “HTWO,” its hydrogen brand and business platform.

A Hyundai Motor Group representative stated, “By establishing the first hydrogen city in Chungbuk, we will help vitalize the local hydrogen economy and contribute to achieving carbon neutrality. Centered on HTWO, we will strengthen the entire value chain from hydrogen production to utilization, and further accelerate the expansion of our domestic and international hydrogen business through external partnerships and investment attraction.”
