"Now It Is Time for the Lee Jaemyung Administration to Respond to Gwangju"
Eunji Chae, Gwangju City Councilor.
On June 23, Eunji Chae, a proportional representative councilor of the Gwangju City Council from the Democratic Party of Korea, emphasized during a 'five-minute free speech' at the plenary session of the temporary meeting that "Gwangju's seven major pledges must be reflected as national policy tasks in this new phase marked by the inauguration of the Lee Jaemyung government of national sovereignty."
Councilor Chae stated, "The impeachment of former President Yoon Sukyeol and the inauguration of the Lee Jaemyung government of national sovereignty were made possible by the resistance and support of Gwangju citizens," and added, "Now is the time for the nation to respond to Gwangju."
She particularly noted, "In the early presidential election, Gwangju recorded the highest nationwide vote share at 87.2%, standing at the forefront of the inauguration of the government of national sovereignty. This was not just support, but a clear demand for the future of the nation."
She continued, "Now, as the five-year national policy plan is being formulated, this is the decisive golden time to elevate local issues to the level of national policy," and requested, "Please give top priority to reflecting Gwangju's pledges."
To this end, Councilor Chae proposed that the city of Gwangju establish a 'pan-political task force' that transcends political factions and parties to ensure practical responses and strategic efforts. She also suggested that the city and the council jointly host a series of policy relay forums to build public consensus. She called on Gwangju citizens to show interest in local pledges and to promote Gwangju's pledges using online national proposal platforms and social media.
Councilor Chae stated, "The council, as Gwangju City's frontline policy partner, will work together to design the region's future and achieve results that realize the aspirations of our citizens," and added, "If Gwangju in 1980 created today's Republic of Korea, then Gwangju in 2025 will change the Republic of Korea of tomorrow."
Meanwhile, on June 17, the city of Gwangju opened the 'Presidential Pledge Seoul Situation Room' in Seoul and began activities to ensure that local pledges are reflected as national policy tasks. Gwangju's seven major pledges are: ▲ Establishment of a national pilot city for artificial intelligence (AI) ▲ Creation of a civil-military integrated gateway airport in the southwestern region ▲ Development of Korea's leading mobility city ▲ Declaration of the era of Asia Culture Hub City 3.0 ▲ Waterfront revitalization projects for the Yeongsangang River and Gwangjucheon Stream ▲ Establishment of national ultra-high magnetic field research infrastructure ▲ Creation of a southwestern mega-city.
