83.5 mm in Gokseong, 76.9 mm in Gwangju: "Heavy Rain"
Access Restricted to River Entrances and Parking Lots
Up to 150 mm of Additional Rain Expected Through the 22nd
As the stationary front moves southward, heavy rain warnings have been issued for Gwangju and the Jeonnam region, and rain-related damage and traffic restrictions continue. As of 8 a.m. on June 21, heavy rain warnings are in effect for Gwangju and Damyang, Gokseong, and Hampyeong in Jeonnam, while heavy rain advisories have been issued for Naju, Gurye, Jangseong, Hwasun, Yeongam, Muan, Yeonggwang, Mokpo, Shinan (excluding Heuksan-myeon), Heuksando, and Hongdo.
Due to the influence of the stationary front, heavy rain warnings have been issued for Gwangju and Jeonnam, and flooding and traffic restrictions caused by heavy rain continue, requiring special caution. Yonhap News
According to the Gwangju Regional Meteorological Administration, from the previous day until the morning of June 21, the highest cumulative rainfall was recorded at Okgwa in Gokseong with 83.5 mm, followed by Hampyeong with 79.5 mm, Bongsan in Damyang with 77.5 mm, Gwangju with 76.9 mm, Muan Airport with 60 mm, and Anmado in Yeonggwang with 56.5 mm. The highest hourly rainfall was 47.5 mm at Bongsan in Damyang, 39.5 mm in Gokseong, and 39.1 mm in Gwangju, indicating that intense rain was concentrated in a short period.
As the monsoon rain continues, minor rain damage reports are also being received. In Gwangju, a total of seven incidents were reported to the 119 emergency center, including four cases of fallen trees and three cases of road flooding. In Jeonnam, five cases of road traffic disruptions due to fallen trees and other causes were reported.
Preventive control measures are also being implemented in areas under heavy rain warnings. In Gwangju, access has been restricted at 336 river entry and exit points, 57 stepping stone bridges, and 11 riverside parking lots. In Jeonnam, eight riverside roads and 21 riverside parking lots are currently under control. Access to one location in Mudeungsan and four locations in national parks in Jeonnam has also been restricted, and three passenger ships have suspended operations on three routes including Wando and Mokpo.
The Korea Meteorological Administration stated, "Until the following day, 50 to 120 mm of heavy rain is expected in the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions, with some areas possibly receiving more than 150 mm," and urged special caution against rain-related damage such as flooding in low-lying areas, rapid currents, and facility management.
