Advanced Traffic Safety Award from the Minister of the Interior and Safety
Winner of the Korea Communications Commission's Good Program of the Month Award
"I want to incorporate local stories into my programs"
"I want to become a producer who can bring a fresh breeze to our region by incorporating all the stories around me into my programs."
The mobile driver's license, which has become an essential part of daily life by allowing people to conveniently verify their identity anywhere?this is the story of Jae-gyu Na, a 42-year-old PD at Gwangju Traffic Broadcasting, who was the first to propose this idea.
Since 2013, Na has been working at Traffic Broadcasting, planning and directing programs covering pop music, trot, and information, while communicating with citizens. The most important aspect of Na's production philosophy is to create programs that center on local stories and resonate with community members.
Na said, "Currently, I communicate with listeners every morning at 9 a.m. through the program 'Studio 973.' Since it is a traffic broadcasting station, we focus on traffic and disasters, but as a local broadcaster, I strive to include all the stories around us in our programming."
By listening to the stories around him and incorporating them into his work, Na has become known for presenting the most creative and unique ideas. In 2017, during a workshop held by the Korea Road Traffic Authority for its employees, Na was the first to introduce the idea of a "mobile driver's license." He believed that identity verification through mobile carriers could sufficiently serve as an ID, and that a shorter validity period than a traditional license could turn it into a revenue-generating model. This idea was further developed by the Authority's Licensing Business Division and eventually paved the way for the expansion to mobile resident registration cards.
In addition, when he served as the team leader for the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's Public Big Data Youth Internship Program from 2020 to 2021, he leveraged his experience as a PD to demonstrate to the interns the proportional relationship between radio signal reception rates and the effectiveness of traffic disaster prevention. In recognition of these achievements, Na received several awards, including the Program of the Year Award from the Gwangju-Jeonnam branch of the Korean Producers Association, the Advanced Traffic Safety Award from the Minister of the Interior and Safety, and the Good Program of the Month Award from the Korea Communications Commission.
Na explained, "At the time, I explained to the youth interns the traffic disaster report data for Gwangju and Jeonnam, as well as the radio signal reception map. When we analyzed the situation during the floods that occurred in Gwangju and Jeonnam in August 2020 using big data, we were able to prove that the wider the radio broadcast coverage, the safer people were from traffic accidents and disasters. Furthermore, by applying systematic data preprocessing to somewhat insufficient traffic reports from correspondents, we conducted new big data analysis focusing on major roads in Gwangju. Believing that my work is directly related to disaster prevention, I also analyzed the correlation between national traffic broadcasting listenership and text message data."
He added, "As a PD responsible for local broadcasting, listening to the stories around me is my main duty. In 2021, I produced a radio documentary about Chief Superintendent An Byeongha and established a relationship with his bereaved family. This year, for the first time, a play about Chief Superintendent An Byeongha will be staged in our region. I want to continue being someone who brings new energy to the community in this way."
