After Requesting Dispatch of 9 Prosecutors, Additional Selections Made
Police to Dispatch 31 Personnel Requested by Special Prosecutor Cho
On June 19, Special Prosecutor Cho Eunseok, who is investigating the insurrection and treason case related to former President Yoon Sukyeol's declaration of the 12·3 martial law, requested the dispatch of personnel from the prosecution and police.
Through a press release on the same day, Special Prosecutor Cho announced, "In consultation with the Police Martial Law Special Investigation Unit, we have decided to include 31 investigators, including the head of the Serious Crimes Investigation Division, in the investigation team and have requested their dispatch from the National Police Agency."
In addition, he selected 42 prosecutors, including all prosecutors currently maintaining the indictment in the ongoing insurrection case trial, and requested the Supreme Prosecutors' Office to dispatch them as well. Previously, on June 16, Special Prosecutor Cho had requested the dispatch of nine prosecutors at the deputy chief or chief prosecutor level from the Supreme Prosecutors' Office.
The police announced that they would dispatch all 31 personnel requested by Special Prosecutor Cho, including Park Changhwan, head of the Serious Crimes Investigation Division (Senior Superintendent), to the special investigation team for the insurrection case.
Having officially launched the investigation on June 18, Special Prosecutor Cho additionally indicted former Defense Minister Kim Yonghyun on charges including obstruction of official duties by deception and instigation of evidence destruction. He also plans to request an additional arrest warrant for former Minister Kim. Kim's current detention period is set to expire on June 26, but if the court approves the request, his detention may be extended by up to six months.
