Yoon Sukyeol Fails to Respond to Third Police Summons
Police Consider Arrest Warrant as Investigation into Insurrection Begins
Former President Yoon Sukyeol has not responded to the police's third summons.
On June 19, the Special Investigation Unit of the National Police Agency's National Investigation Headquarters announced to the media, "We will wait for former President Yoon until the end of the working day."
Former President Yoon has been booked on charges of obstructing the execution of special official duties, for allegedly instructing the Presidential Security Service to prevent his arrest.
He is also accused of abuse of authority under the Presidential Security Service Act, for allegedly instructing the Security Service on December 7, 2024?four days after the declaration of martial law?to delete information related to secure phones of former Army Special Warfare Commander Kwak Jonggeun, former Capital Defense Commander Lee Jinwoo, and former Defense Security Commander Yeo Inhyeong.
Yoon's side is actively denying the charges brought by the police and claims there is no need for an investigation.
The police are reportedly considering measures to secure Yoon's custody, such as applying for an arrest or detention warrant, if he fails to comply with this latest summons as well. Typically, investigative agencies consider compulsory measures if a suspect fails to appear after being summoned three times without a valid reason.
Since the 'Special Investigation into Insurrection' is about to begin, any move to secure Yoon's custody may involve consultation with Special Prosecutor Cho Eunseok. A police official stated, "We handed over related records of former Defense Minister Kim Yonghyun to the special prosecutor yesterday."
