Starting this year, the individual annual donation limit for the Hometown Love Donation Program was raised from 5 million won to 20 million won. Yang's donation marks the first case in Gwangju of a 20 million won contribution under the new limit.
Yang Piljung, originally from Gwangju, graduated from Chosun University College of Medicine and previously served as director at Gwangju Bora Eye Hospital and Bright Eye 21 Hospital. He now operates Shinsegye Eye Clinic in Yeosu.
Even after relocating his medical practice, Yang has consistently engaged in talent donations, providing ophthalmic care and surgeries for low-income individuals, thereby actively embodying the value of sharing.
Yang stated, "I wanted to teach my children the value of living together through meaningful actions rather than a hundred words," adding, "I hope that my small gesture toward Seo-gu, which is like my hometown, will bring warmth to our neighbors."
Kim Ikang, mayor of Seo-gu, commented, "Seo-gu is a good city built together with residents who practice the values of sharing and solidarity," and added, "We will share Dr. Yang's noble intentions with the local community and utilize them as a valuable resource for community recovery and future generations."
Meanwhile, the Hometown Love Donation Program was introduced to foster a healthy donation culture and promote balanced regional development. The donations are used to support vulnerable social groups through programs such as Cheonwon Guksi and Cheonwon Taxi, as well as for community-specific projects.
