Jeonnam Province announced that, as part of the 2025 Namdo K-Garden Festival, a hydrangea festival will be held for about two and a half months until the end of August at private gardens and arboretums in Jeonnam Province, which are renowned nationwide for their beautiful hydrangeas.
The main hydrangea festivals will take place at seven locations: Ssukseom in Goheung (Private Garden No. 1), Jukhwagyeong in Damyang (No. 2), Jangsuso Healing Garden in Goheung (No. 7), Seongnim Garden in Boseong (No. 12), Walnut Healing Garden in Jangheung (No. 13), Biwon in Haenam (No. 28), and Haenam Forest Arboretum (Private Arboretum No. 3).
As its name suggests, the hydrangea is a summer flower that loves water. Jeonnam offers ideal conditions for hydrangeas to thrive outdoors, including sunlight, water, and wind. As a result, the region boasts vibrant hydrangea blooms in white, pink, blue, and other colors, attracting tourists from all over.
During hydrangea season, Ssukseom in Goheung transforms into a watercolor painting, with blooming hydrangeas set against the blue Dadohae Sea. The garden, cultivated over more than 20 years by owners Kim Sanghyun and Ko Chaehoon, is hosting its hydrangea festival until June 30.
Jukhwagyeong in Damyang (garden owner Yoo Younggil) is a garden covering 20,000 square meters (6,000 pyeong) and features over 200 species of diverse plants. The garden, filled with snowflake-like white hydrangeas, will host the "European Hydrangea Festival" from July 26 until the end of August.
Jangsuso Healing Garden in Goheung (garden owner Baek Euilyeong) has been cultivated since 2005, with 10 million flowers and trees planted across 32,000 square meters (10,000 pyeong). The "Hydrangea Feast" festival, held until the end of June when hydrangeas and hollyhocks are in full bloom, has established itself as a major tourist attraction in the region.
Seongnim Garden in Boseong is located within Yunjerim (373 hectares), which was cultivated for over 60 years by Yunje Ko Jeongsangwan, who was named a "Forest Master Family" by the Korea Forest Service in 2020, and his son, Chairman Jeong Eunjo. Forty thousand hydrangeas blend with the cypress forest, making it a famous hydrangea destination that is crowded with visitors every year.
Walnut Healing Garden in Jangheung was created as the result of 20 years of effort by garden owner Kim Jaewon, who built the Noble Walnut Museum on what was once a barren field. The "5th Hydrangea Flower Festival and Noble Walnut Special Exhibition" will be held until August 15.
Biwon in Haenam, owned by Kim Mijeong, features more than 7,000 species of plants and hydrangeas planted across 10,000 square meters (3,000 pyeong), preserving the natural terrain and harmonizing with the surrounding forest and village fields. From June 20 to July 10, a festival featuring one million hydrangea blooms is scheduled to take place.
Haenam Forest Arboretum (director Kim Geonyeong) is known as the original hydrangea garden of Jeonnam and will host the "Land's End Hydrangea Festival" until July 14. The vast arboretum, spanning 198,000 square meters (60,000 pyeong), features 250 species and over 8,000 hydrangea bushes, as well as around 1,600 other plant species, attracting about 100,000 visitors every year.
In addition, visitors can enjoy colorful hydrangea gardens at Dreaming Garden in Yeosu, Sky Blue Arboretum Garden in Jangheung, and Lumonde Garden in Jangseong.
Jeonnam Province has discovered 30 private gardens and developed them into beautiful destinations to visit year-round. As a result, 10 of these gardens were selected among Korea's Top 30 Private Gardens last year?a remarkable achievement.
