Gyeongbuk Councilor Hyungshik Lee Visits Daewoo Headquarters, Urges Resumption of Apartment Supply in Provincial Government New Town

Hyungshik Lee, a Gyeongbuk Provincial Councilor from the People Power Party representing Yecheon, visited the headquarters of Daewoo Engineering & Construction together with local residents on June 13 to address the issue of delayed apartment sales in the Gyeongbuk Provincial Government New Town. By doing so, he led Daewoo to a full reconsideration of its business plan, marking a practical turning point for stabilizing housing in the new town.

During the meeting, Councilor Lee stated, "Several years have passed since the creation of the new town, yet the delay in apartment sales has resulted in severe hardships for residents, including housing insecurity, stagnation of local businesses, and a lack of living infrastructure." He also expressed concern that "Daewoo Engineering & Construction's announcement to suspend the originally planned supply of apartments has further heightened anxiety within the local community."

Councilor Lee formally requested a review of the apartment construction plans within the Gyeongbuk Provincial Government New Town, strongly conveying the necessity of restarting the project from the perspectives of improving residents' living conditions and achieving balanced regional development. In response, Daewoo Engineering & Construction shifted its stance from 'supply suspension' to 'full reconsideration of the project,' opening a substantive channel for negotiations.

Lee emphasized, "Only when actual residential conditions and essential infrastructure are in place will it be possible to attract new residents and revitalize the new town." He added, "I will continue to closely monitor the situation to ensure that apartment sales and the expansion of living infrastructure proceed swiftly through organic cooperation among Gyeongbuk Province, the Gyeongbuk Development Corporation, and private developers."

Meanwhile, the project in the Gyeongbuk Provincial Government New Town underwent a design competition in 2021 and received construction approval in 2023. However, the prolonged sales schedule has continued to inconvenience residents. Councilor Lee has consistently raised the issue and taken proactive measures to improve the actual residential environment and strengthen the settlement base in the new town.
