With the project having cleared this key hurdle, the city is expected to accelerate full-scale development, aiming to designate the area as an urban development district in the second half of this year.

The Gwangju Station Area (Phase 2) urban development project is a large-scale initiative to create a mixed-use, self-sustaining city that integrates residential, commercial, and industrial functions on a site of approximately 450,000 square meters, centered around the indirect station area of Gyeonggang Line’s Gyeonggi Gwangju Station.

In particular, the project is expected not only to strengthen its connection with the Phase 1 urban development project, but also to revitalize Gwangju City’s core living zone, the ‘Gyeongan Living Area,’ by expanding the urban spatial structure.

Following the successful public interest review by the Central Land Expropriation Committee, Gwangju City is now focusing on the next step: the review by the Gyeonggi-do Urban Planning Committee. The city plans to swiftly proceed with all subsequent procedures, including establishing a compensation plan and obtaining implementation plan approval, after the area is designated as an urban development district.

Gwangju City also plans to design a spatial structure that leverages the region’s natural resources, such as Gyeonggi Gwangju Station, Gyeongan Stream, and Jikri Stream, and to realize a sustainable urban model where production, self-sufficiency, and residence are harmoniously balanced. Through these efforts, the city aims to create an environment where citizens want to stay and where future generations can continue to grow together.

Mayor Bang Sehwan said, “The station area urban development project is a core initiative that will open the future of Gwangju City and serve as an important opportunity to achieve both balanced regional development and enhanced urban competitiveness. We will do our utmost to deliver tangible results within this year and next, in order to reward residents for their patience during years of restricted property rights.”
