Gwangju City is operating two "dual-wing situation rooms": the "Presidential Pledge Seoul Situation Room" and the "Neighborhood Economy Situation Room," working in close coordination with the Lee Jaemyung administration to lay the groundwork for regional development.
On June 16, Gwangju City held a "Presidential Pledge National Task Force (TF) Meeting" in the city hall's medium conference room, presided over by Mayor Kang Kijeong and attended by department heads and heads of public institutions, to review strategies for reflecting the new administration's national tasks.
At the meeting, the city decided to formally establish and operate the "Presidential Pledge Seoul Situation Room" and the "Neighborhood Economy Situation Room" to promote the transformation of presidential pledges into national tasks and to revitalize the local economy.
The "Presidential Pledge Seoul Situation Room" will serve as a forward base for real-time policy consultations with the Office of the President, the National Policy Planning Committee, and central government ministries, focusing on Gwangju's seven major regional pledges and other key issues. The city plans to make every effort to ensure that Gwangju's priorities are included in the government's national agenda by establishing a proactive response system from the early stages of national task planning.
Gwangju's seven major pledges are: ▲ Promotion of the creation of a national AI pilot city ▲ Active promotion of a civil-military integrated gateway airport in the southwestern region ▲ Establishment of Korea's leading mobility city ▲ Declaration of the era of Asian Culture Hub City 3.0 ▲ Active promotion of the Yeongsangang and Gwangjucheon riverside revitalization project ▲ Establishment of a national ultra-high magnetic field research infrastructure ▲ Creation of a southwestern megacity.
The "Neighborhood Economy Situation Room" will also be operated to support the recovery of the local economy. It will focus on on-site, practical policy discussions to boost consumption, protect small business owners, and revitalize local commercial districts. The first meeting is scheduled for June 18 to review the progress of matching projects between public institutions and local commercial districts. On June 20, a roundtable will be held to discuss ways to promote the use of public delivery apps and seek practical measures to stimulate consumption.
The city also plans to propose bold and proactive new national tasks that leverage the region's industries and characteristics, regardless of whether they were included in Gwangju's presidential pledges. The city intends to propose the establishment of a new "Ministry of Artificial Intelligence (tentative name)" to accelerate AI policy implementation under the new administration. In addition, the city will request the new government and the political community to enact a "Special Act on the Creation of a National AI Pilot City (tentative name)" that includes the establishment of the National AI Industry Innovation Promotion Institute and the operation of a special accounting system.
Gwangju, as a city of democracy, human rights, and peace, also plans to propose the relocation of judicial institutions such as the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Court to the region. To ensure the sustainability of neighborhood economy policies, the city is considering establishing a dedicated organization for local commercial districts under the city government.
Mayor Kang Kijeong stated, "The Lee Jaemyung administration is moving at a rapid pace, forming an Emergency Economic Task Force and launching the National Policy Planning Committee. In line with this, Gwangju is operating the 'Neighborhood Economy Situation Room' and the 'Presidential Pledge Seoul Situation Room.' The operation of these dual-wing situation rooms will amplify the voices of small business owners and the people of Gwangju. I urge everyone to work together so that, under the Lee Jaemyung administration, Gwangju can soar with the two wings of reflecting its pledges in national tasks and revitalizing local commercial districts for the city's future."
