Eunseok Jo, the special prosecutor appointed to investigate the 12·3 Martial Law-related rebellion case, stated that he is reviewing facilities of the prosecution, police, and the Gwacheon Government Complex as potential offices for the special investigation into the rebellion.
On June 14, Special Prosecutor Jo announced to the press, "Since the main matters of the rebellion special investigation concern military affairs, conducting official duties in a commercial building could pose security issues, such as the risk of leaking military secrets. Therefore, I have requested cooperation from the police and prosecution to see if there are any available spaces, and I have inspected their facilities. I am also checking whether there is available space at the Gwacheon Government Complex."
After being appointed by President Lee Jaemyung on June 12, Special Prosecutor Jo visited the Seoul High Prosecutors' Office the following day for his first official schedule, where he met with Park Sehyun, head of the Special Investigation Headquarters for Martial Law at the prosecution (Chief Prosecutor of the Seoul High Prosecutors' Office). On June 14, he reportedly also inspected the former building of the Seodaemun Police Station in Seoul as a potential office. The Seodaemun Police Station vacated its old building in April last year for the construction of a new building and is currently using a temporary office.
According to the Special Prosecutor Act, Special Prosecutor Jo has up to 20 days of preparation period from his appointment on June 12, during which he may request the appointment of assistant special prosecutors, secure office space, and form the investigation team. After the preparation period, he may conduct the investigation for up to 170 days.
The special investigation team for the rebellion case is expected to be the largest in the history of special prosecutors, comprising 267 members (1 special prosecutor, 6 assistant special prosecutors, 60 dispatched prosecutors, 100 dispatched public officials, and 100 special investigators).
