"Purchased Over 1,000 Rare Coins Over Several Years"
Most Coins Date Back Several Centuries
Notary Discovers Coins Hidden in Wall Behind Painting in Storage Room
A rare coin collection discovered in the wall of a house in France has been sold at auction for several million euros.
On June 13 (local time), CNN reported, citing a French auction house, that a coin collection found in the home of a deceased collector was sold for a total price of over 3 million euros (approximately 4.73 billion won).
According to the report, the coin collection was amassed by Paul Nars, who lived in a small village in southwestern France. He passed away last year. Thierry Parsy, a coin expert, stated, "The collector lived a frugal life," and added, "He had not seen much of the world and devoted his money to his collection." He further explained that the collector had purchased more than 1,000 rare coins over several years, most of which date back several centuries.
The collection includes ancient coins from the Macedonian Kingdom dating back to 336?323 BC, as well as coins used during the reigns of French kings Louis XIV, Louis XV, and Louis XVI.
The collector had no children, and no one knew that he was collecting coins. According to the BBC, no one knew where the coins were stored, and "if the notary had not searched for the coins after the collector spent his last year in a nursing home, these rare coins might never have been discovered." The report added, "The notary found the coins in a wall hidden behind a painting in the storage room," and discovered "ten bundles containing labeled collectibles and 172 20-franc gold coins, equivalent to one gold bar."
