Efforts to Address Welfare Blind Spots for Veterans

Seogu Honors, a group of major donors in Gwangju's Seogu District, organized an event in June, the Month of Patriots and Veterans, to express gratitude and respect to veterans and their families. The group also announced plans to expand support based on public-private cooperation.

Seogu Honors stated that at the 2025 Veterans Organization Dedication Ceremony held on the 12th at Wedding Group Withus Gwangju, they presented Onnuri gift certificates worth 300,000 won each to 88 veterans of the Korean War, as a tribute of remembrance and gratitude for their noble sacrifices.

The dedication ceremony was attended by around 300 people, including members from 12 local veterans' organizations. During the event, veterans' organizations, together with students from the military specialization department at Geumpa Technical High School, led a generational integration entrance march with symbolic flags, introducing the history and achievements of each organization.

The ceremony also featured a performance of the national anthem by the Pungam Children's Choir, awards for 12 exemplary national merit recipients, and commemorative photographs for the honorees, provided as a talent donation by the social enterprise Gwangju In Studio.

Meanwhile, Seogu is also working to address gaps in veterans' welfare. On the 30th, the district plans to provide Onnuri gift certificates worth 500,000 won each to 20 members of the Vietnam War Veterans' Families Association (Widows' Association), who have been excluded from national veterans' benefits.

Seogu explained that since this association has not been officially registered and has remained outside the formal system, the district intends to offer both emotional comfort and practical support.

Kim Ikang, Mayor of Seogu, stated, "I extend my deepest comfort and gratitude to those who have devoted themselves to the nation in unseen places, as well as to their families." He added, "True to Seogu's reputation as a city of kindness, we will continue to fill welfare blind spots by supplementing the limitations of administration with the warm sharing of the private sector."
