Dongjin Semichem, a company specializing in semiconductor and display materials, announced on June 12 that it has signed a license agreement with Merck Electronics KGaA (hereafter Merck), a global electronic materials company based in Germany, granting Merck the right to use its self-developed spirobifluorene-based OLED material patent.
This agreement allows Merck, a top-tier global company with a large number of OLED material patents and a leading global market share, to utilize Dongjin Semichem's spirobifluorene-based OLED material patent. Under the agreement, Dongjin Semichem is the patent licensor and Merck is the licensee.
While most domestic OLED material companies have frequently conducted business by obtaining patent licenses from global companies, this case is significant in that Dongjin Semichem, a Korean OLED material company, has granted a patent license to Merck, a global industry leader.
Previously, Dongjin Semichem also signed a patent license agreement with Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd. (hereafter Idemitsu Kosan), a Japanese company ranked in the top five in the OLED material market, regarding another OLED material patent.
Idemitsu Kosan, in particular, collaborates with major Korean companies such as LG Display, LG Chem, and SK Materials, and has also agreed to produce OLED materials incorporating Dongjin Semichem's patented technology.
As global leading companies continue to sign patent license agreements for Dongjin Semichem's OLED materials, industry analysts note that Dongjin Semichem's patent competitiveness and technological excellence are being recognized worldwide.
In addition, Dongjin Semichem is mass-producing and supplying CPL (Capping Layer) materials, which improve the luminous efficiency of OLED panels and enhance reliability against external light, to domestic and overseas customers, thereby gaining recognition for its technological capabilities.
This material, in particular, has been applied to many models of Samsung Galaxy, Galaxy Fold, and iPhone, and research and development for next-generation materials to be used in upcoming models is currently underway.
In addition to CPL materials, Dongjin Semichem has also developed and built a patent portfolio for HTL (Hole Transfer Layer) and next-generation Blue materials, and has plans to expand its business areas over the medium and long term.
Yoo Hansung, Executive Vice President overseeing Dongjin Semichem's OLED business, stated, "This license agreement is highly meaningful in that it confirms Dongjin Semichem's technological excellence to the extent that we can grant patent rights to global leaders in the OLED materials field," adding, "Based on our technological capabilities, we will continue to focus on developing new materials to further expand our OLED materials business."
