On June 12, Jaseng Hospital of Korean Medicine stated that excessive salt intake can cause various physical problems and chronic diseases, and therefore caution is needed. Sodium in salt dries out the blood and, depending on the amount consumed, can place a burden on the bladder and kidneys, increasing the risk of cystitis and kidney stones.
In addition, salty foods can damage the gastric mucosa and cause chronic gastritis, which increases the risk of developing stomach cancer. Sodium also promotes the excretion of calcium in urine, lowering bone density and, in severe cases, potentially causing osteoporosis.
Younghyun Bae, Director of Ilsan Jaseng Hospital of Korean Medicine, said, "Despite the benefits of salt, such as preventing dehydration in midsummer, excessive consumption of salty desserts?which may not taste salty?can result in exceeding the recommended daily sodium intake (2,000mg or less). Therefore, it is best to consume only a moderate amount." He also advised, "Patients with kidney disease, those with hypertension, and the elderly should consume only small amounts."
However, he emphasized that an appropriate intake of sodium is essential. Salt has a cooling property and regulates the body's water metabolism, helping to preserve body fluids and quench thirst. In addition, it strengthens the spleen and stomach, boosts energy, helps replenish electrolytes, and prevents dehydration. On hot summer days, when experiencing thirst, headaches, or fatigue, it can help recover from thirst and restore energy.
Director Bae explained, "When you sweat a lot, a large amount of electrolytes such as sodium is lost along with body fluids. If electrolyte balance is disrupted, energy levels can drop and lethargy can occur. Therefore, consuming an appropriate amount of mildly salty food helps maintain the body's balance."
