Yeongyang County Conducts Joint Pest Control to Eradicate Sudden Outbreak Pests

Yeongyang County in North Gyeongsang Province, led by County Governor Oh Dochang, has been making every effort to control sudden outbreak pests that damage crops from June 2 to June 30. The county designated June 10 as the "Joint Pest Control Day" and, in collaboration with the Yeongyang County Forest and Greenery Division and the Yeongdeok National Forest Management Office, conducted joint pest control operations.

Sudden outbreak pests, such as the spotted lanternfly, the brown marmorated stink bug, and the brown-winged cicada, are invasive species that emerge due to foreign introduction and climate change. They typically hatch in May and remain active until October. These pests cause significant damage to crops by sucking sap from fruit trees and excreting substances that lead to sooty mold disease.

In particular, sudden outbreak pests tend to move from farmland to nearby forests when pest control is carried out, only to return to the farmland later. Therefore, the current period, when the pests have just hatched and their wings are not yet developed, is the most effective time for control measures.

This year's joint pest control focused on the Seokbo-myeon area, which was recently affected by wildfires. The operation was carried out thoroughly with 30 professional pest control personnel and staff from related organizations, utilizing pest control vehicles and SS sprayers.

Governor Oh Dochang stated, "To prevent the recurring damage caused by sudden outbreak pests every year, we are proactively supplying pesticides to all farms. We will prioritize pest control in areas affected by wildfires and do our utmost to minimize crop damage."
