According to Gwangju City on June 11, this year’s festival will be held under the theme “The Style of Toechon! The Taste of Tomatoes!” The event aims to widely promote the excellence of the premium Toechon tomatoes and to offer a family-oriented and participatory festival where local residents and city dwellers can communicate and enjoy together.
Now in its 23rd year, the festival is a true community-based local festa led by local residents and joined by citizens, making it Gwangju City’s representative summer festival. A distinctive feature of the festival is that local residents take the lead in everything from planning to operations, establishing the event as a signature local celebration created in partnership with the village community.
This year, a variety of family-friendly experience programs are prepared, including a Tomato Experience Play Zone, Tomato Pool, Find the Golden Tomato, Make Your Own Tomato Flowerpot, Tomato Catch Challenge, and Tomato Recreation. In addition, there will be a tomato evaluation and tasting event, sales booths for tomatoes and local specialties, a food zone, and photo zones, providing plenty of attractions. Photo zones and SNS certification events for younger generations and family visitors will also be available.
Mayor Bang Sehwan stated, “The Toechon Tomato Street Festival is the representative local festa of Gwangju City,” adding, “Through this festival, which brings together citizens, farmers, and tourists, we hope to revitalize the local community.”
