Signing of MOU for Joint Construction of Advanced Multi-Sensor Satellite Network
Hanwha Systems is partnering with BAE Systems to build a next-generation surveillance and reconnaissance satellite network. This move is aimed at strengthening its competitiveness for entry into the global satellite market.
On June 10, Hanwha Systems announced, "By combining our domestic leading small SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) satellite technology with the radio frequency (RF) satellite capabilities of BAE Systems, the UK's leading defense company, we will establish a unique surveillance and reconnaissance satellite network."
To this end, Hanwha Systems has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with BAE Systems for cooperation in jointly building an advanced multi-sensor satellite network. The multi-sensor satellite system can collect diverse data from both RF and SAR satellites, analyze it more precisely and accurately using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, and provide it rapidly.
Hanwha Systems supplies the SAR payload for the 425 satellite, Korea's first surveillance and reconnaissance satellite. In December 2023, the company succeeded in launching a small SAR satellite with 1-meter resolution developed entirely with domestic technology, demonstrating the capabilities of the private sector in observation and surveillance and reconnaissance satellites.
Currently, Hanwha Systems is participating in Korea's first low Earth orbit communications test satellite development project, which is led by the Agency for Defense Development. The company is developing communications satellite payloads and is actively involved in establishing an independent military low Earth orbit satellite network.
Song Sungchan, head of Hanwha Systems' Space Division, stated, "Small SAR satellites are recognized worldwide for their high value as surveillance and reconnaissance assets. Through collaboration with BAE, we will build a next-generation surveillance and reconnaissance satellite network and secure a strong position in the global satellite market."
Rachael Hoyle, Space Director of Digital Intelligence at BAE Systems, explained, "Technological cooperation with Hanwha Systems is an excellent opportunity for both companies to strengthen our influence in the global surveillance and reconnaissance satellite market. Based on cooperation between leading defense companies in Korea and the UK, we believe we can also contribute to the future development of space industry technologies."
