Democratic Party Daegu City Party Urges Thorough Investigation into Drunk Driving and Driver Switching Allegations by Daegu Nam-gu Council Member

On June 9, the Democratic Party Daegu City Party issued a statement urging, "Jeong Jaemok, the Deputy Chairperson of the Daegu Nam-gu Council from the People Power Party, who is under suspicion of switching drivers after drunk driving, should immediately resign, and the police must conduct a thorough investigation."

The Democratic Party Daegu City Party stated, "According to reports, CCTV footage secured by the police shows that the person who initially drove the vehicle was Deputy Chairperson Jeong, while at the time of the police stop, a female passenger in her 50s was behind the wheel. Both the woman and Deputy Chairperson Jeong were intoxicated at the time, and the woman was found to have a blood alcohol concentration at the license suspension level. The police are currently conducting a preliminary investigation into allegations of 'driver switching' and aiding and abetting drunk driving."

The Democratic Party Daegu City Party continued, "Drunk driving is a serious crime that endangers the lives of others, and any act of committing or abetting it can never be tolerated. In particular, 'driver switching' is an attempt to disrupt and interfere with the legitimate duties of the police, and if this is true, it amounts to a public official mocking the authority of law enforcement. Furthermore, Deputy Chairperson Jeong is the Chair of the Special Ethics Committee of the Nam-gu Council and should serve as a model for public officials' ethics. Something absolutely unacceptable has occurred," they added.

The Democratic Party Daegu City Party stated, "First, Deputy Chairperson Jeong Jaemok must immediately resign from all public offices and fully cooperate with the investigation. Second, the Daegu Nam-gu Council must thoroughly investigate the facts through proper procedures and implement appropriate disciplinary measures. Third, the police must conduct a thorough investigation to ensure there is not a single unresolved suspicion regarding this case. Fourth, the People Power Party Daegu City Party must provide a responsible explanation for this matter and sincerely apologize to the citizens of Daegu."
