Bright Red Lava Behind Calm Reporter... The "Erupting in Downtown Seoul" Video Raises Alarms

Active Moves to Indicate "AI Use"
"Need for Source Verification and Literacy Campaigns"

As videos created using artificial intelligence (AI) have become so sophisticated that they are difficult to distinguish from reality, calls for related regulations are growing louder.

According to industry sources on June 8, an AI-generated video became a hot topic on the social networking service Threads. The video begins with a broadcaster's announcer delivering breaking news that "lava is erupting in downtown Seoul" and connecting to a reporter on the scene. The reporter appears standing calmly while bright red lava erupts in the background.

The reporter says, "The lava you see behind me is not real. I am AI," and students, celebrities, and businesspeople who appear next all emphasize that they are AI as well, warning viewers not to be deceived.

After the video was shared, viewers expressed amazement at the video’s lifelike quality. At the same time, concerns were raised about the potential misuse of ever-advancing AI technology.

YouTuber 'Ddalggak Designer,' who created the video, explained the background for making it by saying, "I was impressed by a case on the news where someone was scammed in a romance scam using Elon Musk's face. I was surprised that people could be deceived even by crude AI technology."

He added, "With Bio3, anyone can easily generate video and audio if they want to. While accessibility to AI-generated videos is increasing, awareness or caution about this seems to be low."

The video "Life of a Korean Man," produced by the AI video advertising studio Outoffline, also drew attention for depicting the course of life from childhood to old age using AI technology.

As AI-generated videos have reached a level where they blur the line with reality, there are growing calls to indicate whether AI was used in content.

The AI Basic Act, which is set to take effect next year, includes a provision that requires labeling of AI-generated results in content services such as movies and dramas created using generative AI.
