Reasons for Voting for President Lee Jaemyung: "Judgment on Martial Law, Ending Insurrection"

"Administrative Competence" and "Economic Expectations" Also Cited as Reasons

A recent public opinion poll found that the most frequently cited reason for voting for President Lee Jaemyung in the 21st presidential election was "judgment on martial law and ending insurrection."


According to a survey conducted by Gallup Korea on June 4-5 among 1,003 voters nationwide aged 18 or older (with a margin of error of ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level), 27% of those who voted for President Lee said they chose him because of "judgment on martial law and ending insurrection."


The next most common reasons were "job and administrative competence" (17%), "economic expectations and economic policy" (15%), and "better than other candidates" (13%).

Other reasons mentioned included "trust and reliability" and "policies and pledges" (both 9%), "support for the Democratic Party of Korea," "expectation of good performance," "career and experience," and "regime change" (all 7%).


Among those who voted for former presidential candidate Kim Moonsoo of the People Power Party, the most common reason cited was "morality and integrity" (33%). This was followed by "dislike of Lee Jaemyung" (30%) and "trust, reliability, and honesty" (28%).


Other reasons included "career and experience" and "policies and pledges" (both 8%), as well as "truthfulness and absence of falsehood" (6%).


Among those who did not vote for President Lee, 30% cited "judicial risk and criminal allegations," 18% pointed to "lack of trust, lying, and dishonesty," 14% mentioned "lack of morality and self-interest," and 6% referred to "past remarks and controversies."


Those who did not vote for former candidate Kim cited "defending martial law and sympathizing with insurrection" (30%), "dislike of the People Power Party" (19%), "lack of trust and lying," and "dislike of the candidate" (both 4%) as reasons.


Gallup Korea analyzed, "For President Lee, there are many criticisms related to personal matters, while for former candidate Kim, issues with the affiliated political party are more prominent."
