The Busan City hydrogen street cleaning vehicle conversion project is an initiative to replace public waste collection vehicles currently operated with aging diesel engines with zero-emission hydrogen vehicles. The city plans to introduce a total of 65 hydrogen street cleaning vehicles by 2028, and Hyundai Motor Company will produce and supply these vehicles to local districts within Busan accordingly.
The vehicles showcased by Hyundai Motor Company at the event were two models based on the Hyundai Xcient hydrogen electric truck, manufactured by specialty vehicle company AM Special Vehicle: the "Armroll Truck" and the "Compactor Garbage Truck." The Armroll Truck is capable of transporting various types of waste, including household waste and recyclables, while the Compactor Garbage Truck is used to compress and collect lightweight but bulky waste.
The hydrogen street cleaning vehicles produce no emissions and are based on the Xcient hydrogen electric truck, which can travel up to 380 kilometers on a single charge, allowing for a long driving range even with short charging times. In addition, with the full-scale introduction of hydrogen street cleaning vehicles that generate less engine noise and vibration, the working environment for operators is also expected to improve.
Hyundai Motor Company will supply five hydrogen street cleaning vehicles to four districts?Dong-gu, Dongnae-gu, Suyeong-gu, and Yeongdo-gu?in Busan, and plans to expand supply to additional districts such as Gangseo-gu, Nam-gu, and Busanjin-gu starting next year.
A Hyundai Motor Company representative stated, "We will contribute to Busan City's air quality improvement policy and its plan to become a leading city in the circular economy by producing and supplying hydrogen street cleaning vehicles in a timely manner."
